Personal productivity: Healthy body, healthy mind
“Take a break. You may think it’s counterproductive, but taking regular breaks between work boosts memory, concentration, and creativity” - Forbes
Becoming highly productive means taking a holistic approach to your life and business. Whilst productivity tools and techniques can help to unlock your potential and supercharge your productivity, it is essential we take care of our own health.
One of the most important things to consider when it comes to maximising your personal productivity is that it begins with a change in your mindset. All the time management and productivity apps in the world of digital will not make a change if your mind isn’t in the right place and you haven’t set clear steps to achieve it.
Create the business that gives you the life you’ve always dreamed of…
Know when to take a break
You may think it’s counterproductive, but taking regular breaks between work boosts memory, concentration, and creativity. The most productive people know when to step back and take a break. Trying to work at a maximum productivity for hours at a time is taxing and fatiguing. Instead, working in short bursts is more effective, writes lifehack’s Kim Roch. Taking a break after each action on your to-do list or setting a timer to alert you may be helpful to get you into a routine of taking regular breaks.
Be nutrition smart
Keeping yourself fuelled is an essential part of maintaining your productivity. High protein snacks like almonds or peanuts, or high fibre snacks like Natural Greek yogurt with granola are great energy boosters. Simple sugars, like those found in pretzels, crisps, and other ‘junk foods’, are only good for quick bursts of energy but not for longer work periods and will result in an energy crash. Plus, they’re unhealthy and can help gain unwanted weight.
Get enough rest
A 2007 Harvard Business Report suggests that sleep deprivation reduces productivity and makes you more prone to making errors. Being well rested and getting between 7-9 hours sleep each night promotes a better mood, helps reduce stress, boosts creativity, and increases your memory. Taking time to rest will also sharpen your focus and improve your ability to accurately make decisions. Establishing a healthy sleep pattern, taking adequate rest at weekends and regular breaks are important steps to setting yourself up for improved productivity.
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.” – Steve Jobs
Love what you do
As Steve Jobs said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” If you’re not happy in what you are doing, your output and work will reflect that. Finding pleasure in your work is so important to perform at your best. Take pride and seek gratification in what you’re doing, instead of viewing it simply as work or a job, and it will become a more personal project instead of an assignment.
