Personal productivity: You must learn before you earn
“Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat”. – Denis Waitley
Our motto here at ActionCOACH NextLEVEL is never stop learning, for when we learn we grow and it is a motto that we instil in our clients as well as in our team. Business education and re-education is something that everyone in business should be passionate about not just your business coach. As business owners and leaders, you are tasked with wearing many hats and it is the knowledge we learn, gain and share that allows us to develop our competencies across all key areas of business. It may sound exhaustive but you don’t have to everything yourself!
The importance of learning and what it means at ActionCOACH NextLEVEL
Adopting the following personal productivity steps and they will contribute to how you learn and treat elements of learning in business:
Treat failure as an educator
The road to success can be plagued by bumps in the road ending in failures. In the words of Denis Waitley “Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat”. There is a term ‘fail forward’ which means to take a failure and view it as an opportunity, learn from it and grow from it. If you don’t fail, you’re not stepping outside your comfort zone and you’re not trying hard enough! When you fail take time to reflect and pen your feelings, your thoughts, your reasons and look at ways you can move forwards and learn from your actions. What you do next is what counts.
Ask for help when you need it
Don’t stress over something you’re struggling with or how you’re going to get something done in a particular timeframe. Find someone who can help you. This will save you time and perhaps the need to redo it. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. It’s a sign that you trust your colleagues or connections enough to let them help you. Be sure to include the outcome that you are looking for, provide clear instructions and any information they may need when helping you complete the task.
Seek knowledge
Benjamin Franklin once said that “An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest”. So, whether you like watching documentaries, listening to audio books on your daily walk, or simply picking up a book and reading, the most productive people crave and seek extra knowledge. Take ten minutes out of your day to read the paper, a business column, watch YouTube ‘How To’ guides or listen to a podcast. Staying away from your computer for an hour and opening a book can do wonders for your work.
Don’t multitask
Despite what you may think, we are not wired to multi-task and jumping from one task to another and back again is not an effective way of working. Research shows that the brain can only handle two major tasks as a time, and that multitasking can reduce our productivity by as much as 40%. Multitasking limits our focus, adds additional pressure to the working memory and increases mental fatigue. Focus on one task at a time to boost your productivity.
