How to increase personal productivity

"There are countless factors that take our focus away from the important tasks"

When working with local businesses through growth or scale-up; one of the key areas where owners and leaders need the most help is 'How to Maximise or Increase Personal Productivity'. More commonly in today's digitally connected world, there are countless small yet contributing factors that take our focus away from the important tasks at hand, which in turn lead us to losing time on the key elements of our business that are going to ultimately create our success.

Create the business that gives you the life you’ve always dreamed of…

Our first step towards becoming highly productive is to look at what's holding you back. Think about what your day currently looks like and start to visualise what a productive one looks like for you. We're then going to write it down. From here we are going to create a plan with the steps you need to take to move from your current day to a productive day. The key here is writing it down and breaking it down into clear, achievable steps of action.

Here are our top four ways to help you massively increase your personal productivity:

Eat That Frog!

Here at ActionCOACH NextLEVEL we use a tool called a Frog Sheet. Designed using Brian Tracy's famous 'eat the frog' technique and built around Mark Twain's, "eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you for the rest of the day" famous quote. Getting up a little earlier might not sound enjoyable to all of us, but getting out of bed a bit earlier to tackle your most daunting task of the day can help make the rest of the day seem easier. Don't procrastinate and push back your most important task until last minute. Instead, focus on the most important task first, complete it and feel good about it. Then take that break and start on your less important tasks. Completing the most daunting task first will help you feel less resistance towards tasks later in the day and your productivity will improve.

AC-plan-the-night-before-img

Prepare for the next day, plan the night before

Set a time at the end of your working day to write your to-do list and action plan for the following one. Start by identifying your frog, your number one must do task for tomorrow. Then follow it with your secondary tasks. We already understand the benefits of a to-do list but writing one today for tomorrow will help you gain clarity and focus for a productive day. Creating a to-do list before heading home or going to bed will give you a head start on your morning as you've already planned what needs to be done. However, do not over complicate your list. Be realistic with your time and write your top 3 things to achieve after eating that frog! Trying to add too many items to your list will make you feel less accomplished if you don't manage to achieve them all.

"Continue taking steps forward, but perhaps at a smaller or slower pace." - Edberg

Break Things Down

Focusing on the mountain you need to climb can be a daunting thought. If you break it down into smaller steps it becomes easier and more achievable. The same for our achieving our goals. Focus on one smaller task at a time that contributes to your overall goal, instead of looking at all the things you need to complete. Large tasks can be intimidating and difficult to get started, breaking things up into smaller steps and slowing down can help you concentrate and reduce mental stress. Continue taking steps forward, but perhaps at a smaller or slower pace, Edberg says.

Eliminate Digital Distractions

Periodically checking your email or Facebook every twenty minutes can really eat up your time. Facebook reports that over 50% of time on our handsets is spent checking Facebook or Instagram! Instead, set times during the day dedicated to checking your social feeds and inbox. Start in the morning over coffee and anything that is non-urgent write down and respond later in the day, at break times or lunch. Keep your eyes on your Frog and set goals instead of on your inbox or social apps. Disconnecting for a day, or a weekend, if possible, can recharge and revitalize.

We want to be £2M+ business in the next five years. Most Business Owners have that excitement, they have their goal but it's difficult to see it. When you start coaching you get to see it, it starts to become clearer and therefore you believe it's more attainable. We're solicitors, we were never trained to run a business.
